GUT HEALTH
According to the World Gastroenterology Organisation, irritable bowel syndrome, otherwise known as IBS, is a common disorder that affects between 10% to 15% of the global population. IBD, or inflammatory bowel disease, includes conditions such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, and affects approximately 3 million people in the United States. Functional dyspepsia, which is characterized by chronic or recurrent pain or discomfort in the upper abdomen, is also common, with a prevalence of up to 25% in some populations.
Gut disorders can be challenging to diagnose because they often share similar symptoms, and there is no singular test that can diagnose all gut disorders. Symptoms of gut disorders can include abdominal pain, bloating, diarrhea, constipation, and changes in bowel habits.
These symptoms can also be caused by other conditions, such as infections, food intolerances, or other medical conditions.
Gut disorders can have a significant impact on quality of life, and effective treatment is important for improving symptoms and overall well-being.
While Yoga may have some potential benefits for gut health, it should not be used as a replacement for medical treatment. If you are experiencing digestive issues, it’s always a good idea to speak with a healthcare professional for proper diagnosis and treatment.
Yoga helps to improve gut health and reduce symptoms of digestive disorders in a few different ways:
01
Stress Reduction
Yoga practices, such as breathing exercises and relaxation techniques, can help to reduce stress and anxiety.
Chronic stress can have negative impacts on the gut, including disrupting the balance of bacteria in the gut microbiome, contributing to conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
Reducing stress through Yoga may help to improve digestion and overall gut health.
02
Mindful Eating
Yoga encourages mindfulness, which can help you to become more aware of your body’s hunger and fullness signals.
This can help you to make healthier food choices and eat in a way that is more conducive to digestion.
03
Improved Physical Function
Certain Yoga poses, such as twists and forward folds, can help to stimulate the digestive system and improve physical function.
These poses help to massage the abdominal organs, which can improve the movement of waste through the intestines.
In addition, Yoga poses that involve strengthening and stretching the abdominal muscles may also help to improve gut health.
04
Improved Sleep
Yoga can help to improve sleep, which is important for overall gut health.
Poor sleep can disrupt the balance of bacteria in the gut microbiome and contribute to digestive issues.
